Michael Phillips excelled in basketball and track & field and continues to play a role in prep basketball in Decatur. His son Brylan played basketball at Eisenhower where Michael was one of three father-son coaches there. As a General, Michael averaged 16.5 points, 4.5 steals, 4 assists and 4 rebounds. Senior year, Michael won every long jump title, racking up a sectional title AND a state title. Later Michael added a national title for the long jump at the junior Olympics with a jump of 24 feet 2 inches. After a couple of years at a community college, Michael transferred to Wichita State, where he became one of the Shockers outstanding guards.
