Because girl sports weren’t offered during her high school years, Karen was an exceptional softball and basketball player. She played both sports at Illinois State University and participated in national competition in each sport. In 1980 Karen was inducted into Illinois State Athletic Hall of Fame, as a member of the 1969 National Softball team that was inducted in 1987. She was also inducted into Illinois’ Amateur Softball Association Hall of Fame in 1990. An educator at heart, and a sports official for over 20 years, Karen was also inducted in the Illinois Coaches Hall of Fame in 1997.
