Benjamin is a 1966 graduate of Stephen Decatur High School and joined the wrestling team for the 1963 season. Benjamin was a three-time State Qualifier, winning the State Championship Title in 1965 and the following year placed 2nd in State.
In addition to wrestling, Benjamin was also a four-year letterman in football. He was an All-state and an All Big-12 Conference athlete, earning scholarships to Purdue, University of Washington and Colorado before deciding to wrestle at Southern Illinois University.
He was a three-time NCAA Division I Qualifier and recorded an impressive 50 wrestling wins as a Saluki and in 1970 competed in the National AAU Freestyle Meet.
